The three-time UAE champions swamped Indian club Churchill Brothers 5-2 to qualify for the group stage.
Al Wahda entered Group B along with two-time winners Al Ittihad, 2008 semifinalists Bunyodkor of Uzbekistan and Iranian club Zob Ahan. Bunyodkor had made it to the quarter-finals last year.
Al Wahda scored through a brace from Fernando Baiano, while Mahmoud Khamis, Abdulraheem Juma and Ismail Matar scored on each. Churchill Brothers scored through substitutes Dan Ito and Leihaorungbam Dhanachandra Singh.
Al Wahda had their first chance in the 10th minute but Fahed Masoud’s attempt from inside the box was punched away by goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya.
Churchill Brothers had an opportunity in the 15th minute but Okolie Odafa’s try went wide of the right upright.
Al Wahda had another chance in the 23rd minute but Masoud’s free-kick hit the bar. Later, in the 35th minute, Mahmoud Khamis’ try was punched away by Arindam. Churchill Brothers stunned Al Wahda by going ahead in the 41st minute through their Japanese midfielder Dan Ito who tapped in a Charan Rai’s cross from close range. Ito came in for Reisangmi Vanchum, who suffered a thigh injury. But their joy was short-lived as Fernando Baiano levelled it for Al Wahda four minutes later.
Matar set it up perfectly for Baiano, who got past two defenders and scored. Al Wahda took the lead just a minute after the break through Mahmoud Khamis, who headed a Fahed Masoud cross into goal.
Abdulraheem Juma then increased the lead in the 63rd minute. Two minutes later, Baiano scored his second goal of the game, sending his header home off a Fahed Masoud cross.
Churchil Brother scored their second goal through Leihaorungbam Dhanachandra Singh in the 77th minute but their fightback was a little too late as Ismail Matar rounded it off for Al Wahda with five minutes left on the clock.
