After a goalless first half, Saeed Al Kas broke the deadlock in the 56th minute to put the home team ahead and Abdullah Al Kawari levelled the result for the Qataris five minutes from the final whistle.
The first leg of the home and away format of the final ended in 2-2 stalemate and Al Wasl had the advantage of scoring more goals away.
Shaikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president of Al Wasl Club gave away the trophy and medals for the teams.
The match was also attended by the UAE football boss Mohammed Khalfan Al Rumaithi and top officials from the two teams and sports community.
Thousands of Al Wasl fans gathered outside the stadium to watch the game from giant screens. The Higher Organising Committee of the competition ruled Al Wasl must play the second leg of the final without spectators for allowing fans to invade the field during their semi-final home clash against Saudi Arabia’s Al Nasr a couple of weeks ago.
Provoked by a rude gesture from Al Nasr’s Lebanese physiotherapist, fans attempted to attack him, and the small incident was blown up by the media in UAE and Saudi Arabia to reach the amount of a true crisis between the two countries.
The matter was refereed to the FIFA by the Saudis. Finally, the competitions committee of the AGCC sports body said they are competent to determine the difference and held the result of the match. Al Wasl advanced to the final on goals difference.
However, despite the ban, thousands of the club’s faithful fans packed the area around the venue and made their voice heard inside the stadium with the well-placed loud speakers.
Over six thousand spectators wearing the club’s jersey and waving the UAE and Al Wasl yellow flags rushed into the stadium after the final whistle to celebrate the victory. “This is the only silverware for the UAE clubs in the season,” said a young boy. “The senior national team did nothing good and the country’s four representatives in the AFC Champions League failed to make it into the knock-out stage. Al Wasl is the only side which saved the situations and did pride for the nation,” he added.
