The Al Ahli riders first pedalled their way to victory in the team event held at Miliha in Shalrjah on Friday. The cyclists clocked a combined time of 54 minutes 6 seconds in the 40-kilometre race.
Al Arabi of Umm Al Quwain took the second spot, 3 minutes 13 seconds adrift. Riders from the Emirates Club of Ras Al Khaimah timed 1 hour 5 minutes 8 seconds for third place. Salim Al Shehi, board member of the UAE Cycling Federation, presented prizes to the winners at the end of the race.
Yousuf Mirza, meanwhile, led Al Ahli to a three-top finish in the individual championship a day later in Kalba. Mirza, a UAE national team rider, clocked 2 hours 10 minutes to win the 120-kilometre race. Mirza’s teammates, Majid Al Baloushi and Ahmed Abdullah, finished second and third respectively.
The race, held at the Waji Al Halo area in Kalba, attracted riders from 13 clubs. The competition level amongst the participants was intense, but Al Ahli gradually gained control with almost10-kilometre to the end. Though Al Nasr and Al Arabi riders offered a stiff challenge, Al Ahli held on to make a clean sweep of the three-top places.
Shaikh Faisal bin Humaid Al Qasimi, president of the UAE Cycling Federation, distributed prizes to the winners after the race. Khalfan Al Nuami, vice-president of the federation, and Rashid Al Al Shariki, a board member, were also present.
Results: 40-kilometre team event in Sharjah: 1. Al Ahli (54 minutes 6 seconds); 2. Al Arabi (57 minutes 19 seconds); 3. Emirates Club (1 hour 5 minutes 8 seconds.
120-kmilometre individual event in Kalba: 1. Yousuf Mirza (Al Ahli) 2 hours 10 minutes 2 seconds; 2. Majid Baloushi (Al Ahli) same time; 3. Ahmed Abdullah (Al Ahli) same time.
