Throughout the session it was the Red Bulls and Ferraris battling away at the top closely followed by McLaren and Mercedes.

Australian Mark Webber was third quickest in the second Red Bull followed by Brazilian felipe Massa in the second Ferrari.

German Nico Rosberg was fifth quickest for Mercedes ahead of drivers championship leader Briton Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.

Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher was seventh fastest in the second Mercedes.

Williams driver Brazilian Rubens Barichello was eighth fastest ahead of Pole Robert Kubica of Renault and his Williams team-mate German Nico Hulkenberg who completed the top ten.

The session was interrupted for several minutes after Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi of Force India crashed just as he was looking to put a spurt on in hi fourth lap.

Liuzzi emerged unscathed after smashing into the wall protecting the put lane having gone wide into a corner.

“I came out of the last corner quite fast, and I think I hit a puddle in the artificial grass that was quite invisible,” he said.
