The 25-year-old Englishman, still seeking his first win this year, clocked a best time of one minute and 28.653 seconds to lead the way in an early demonstration by the McLaren team that they are still serious contenders in the title race.

Seven times champion Michael Schumacher, 41, was third quickest ahead of his Mercedes team-mate and fellow German Nico Rosberg.

German Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull was fifth ahead of Pole Robert Kubica of Renault in sixth. Vitaly Petrov came in seventh in the second Renault.

Championship leader Mark Webber of Australia was eighth in the second Red Bull and Spaniard Fernando Alonso was ninth for Ferrari, four places ahead of his team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa.

Tenth-placed German Adrian Sutil had the only accident of the session and caused some major damage to his Force India car.

Sutil lost control at the intimidating turn eight with only two minutes remaining of the session.
