The cart helps people of determination reach items on higher shelves using a robotic arm.
Four students from Abu Dhabi University have developed a smart shopping cart designed to help people of determination reach items on high shelves.
D1Cart was designed by electrical and computer engineering students Abdullah Said Gad, Abdalla Eslam Rashed, Saeed Darwish Alkhemeiri, and Gasm Elbary Mohamed.
Users of the D1 Cart can use a joystick to control a robotic arm and lifting mechanism that can effortlessly grab items from higher shelves for them.
D1 Cart also an automated scanning system to provide comfort and convenience to enable people of determination to avoid cashier lines,
The cart’s control system can adjust speed and sensitivity and is designed to incorporate maximum workspace to provide easy and simple manual controlling.
The students said they hoped that the D1 Cart helps make every day shopping an easier, quicker and more pleasant experience for people of determination.
“This integrated system helps limit interaction with store staff and shoppers, which in turn contributes to the precautionary and safety measures taken to avoid Covid-19 transmission,” said the students.
The students worked on the project with the support of Dr Mohammed Ghazal, Professor and Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at ADU, and Dr Mohammad Alkheder, Chair and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering.
They were also supported by Abu Dhabi University’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) and Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC) Electrical.
