Late nights in coffee shops, strolling with friends in the mall, running through episodes in a TV series marathon, spending more than half of each day at a gaming network café or ‘facebooking’ till the crack of dawn (and beyond!) — these may be among some of the things you have been busy enjoying during these summer vacations. Waking up late without an agenda or pending homework had never felt so sweet.

But let’s face it; with the “back to school” season currently buzzing around, you’re probably regretting those precious nights that slipped by. Those days of going out with an extended curfew or staying up late feels like a dream that has now been replaced with the dread of homework, assignments, tests and examinations set to pile up in the following weeks.

The time-shift your body has adapted is already making it hard to imagine waking up early in the morning to get ready for school or college.

Many students feel anxious the night before returning to their usual routine. From lots of tossing and turning to interrupted sleep, the first day of the new semester can be somewhat difficult to adapt to after a long-term break. While some may have taken up part-time jobs or indulged in fulfilling activities, the rest of us might be feeling a little blue after reviewing how unproductively summer sped by.

There’s no need to sink low or brood over the past. Instead, look on the bright side of things and focus on getting back into shape.

Whether you are starting a brand new academic year or a returning to a semester, prep yourself up with a fresh new look by getting a new haircut — school and university-acceptable, of course — and trim your nails. Make sure you’ve got your supplies ready; stock up on stationeries and ensure your backpack is durable enough to last the rest of the year, at least. College and university students can groom themselves with a smart wardrobe that can double as formal wear for potential internship interviews in the future. Spend the last few days of your vacations going through your lessons to settle back into study mode. If this is your new academic year, then research the subjects and courses you’re going to take for a head start.

These tips may help shake off those “back to school” jitters and have you prepared to resume your classes with a fresh mind.
