After two years of waiting for her dream wedding party to happen - an Arab woman has decided to call it quits with her husband. She filed for divorce.
The Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi had granted the divorce and ordered the woman to return Dh80,000 out of the Dh100,000 that her ex-husband gave her as dowry.
Court records showed that the couple had signed a marriage contract two years ago, presided over by judicial officials in a northern emirate.
Excited about her wedding ceremony, the woman spent Dh200,000 to buy her gown and all other things she thought she would need as a bride. But two years later, no party ever happened. Her husband claimed he didn't have the money for it, records show.
After the couple signed their marriage papers, the man also asked her to stay with her family for the time being as he couldn't provide her with a marital home either.
The woman's mother had offered to give them a new villa while he looked for a decent house. The man reportedly refused, insisting that he would get his own home. This also never happened, the woman said in her lawsuit, adding that she continued to live with her family.
During this period, the couple never slept together, according to the court documents. The woman claimed her husband never provided her with monthly allowances, from the time they got married until she filed for a divorce.
The man also reportedly stopped the woman from travelling with her mother for treatment, which she said had affected her morally and psychologically.
Citing all these reasons, she filed for divorce. She also requested alimony, in addition to compensation for the damages and losses she had incurred because of the purchases she made for the supposed wedding.
The Federal Supreme Court upheld earlier rulings by lower courts that separated the couple. The judge also ordered the woman to pay the man Dh80,000 out of the Dh100,000 he paid for the dowry. Then, the man was ordered to pay his ex-wife Dh30,000. All other requests, including the payment for wedding purchases, were rejected.
