A woman bank employee embezzled Dh20 million to allegedly spend it on a man -- who promised to marry her -- and his brothers, the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court heard. The bank was able to recover Dh15 million of the embezzled money, reported Al Bayan.
The bank froze the employee's assets and sold all the cars and merchandise purchased with the embezzled money.
The man -- the second defendant -- whom the woman considered as her lover, is seven years younger than her.
The third and fourth defendants -- brothers of the second defendant -- have handed over the money they received from the woman to the authorities.
The case goes back to June 2017, when the employee abused her position as the head of accounts department and a customer service manager at a bank. She took the pass of one of her colleagues and carried out the transaction without following protocol.
Police investigations unearthed that she had spent millions on the man and his brothers, both in cash and in kind. The woman paid off their debts, bought luxury cars with special plates, business class plane tickets to European countries, exorbitant gifts and branded watches.
During the court hearing -- which lasted few minutes -- the defence lawyers and the defendants submitted their statements that no report had been received regarding the employee's indictment, nor was there any bank statement indicating the total amount embezzled from the bank and its recovery.
The court postponed the hearing of the case to a further date.
