The Ras Al Khaimah Civil Court has ordered an engineer to pay Dh22,500 he had embezzled from the consultancy company he used to work with.
As per court records, the case unfolded when the company lodged a complaint against the engineer with the RAK Police, alleging that he had siphoned off Dh21,000. He was interrogated by the RAK Public Prosecution where he admitted to having received the money, but denied the charges and claimed to have kept the money in a special drawer at the company.
“However, the money was gone, and I don’t know who stole it,” he told the prosecutors.
The case was taken to the RAK Misdemeanour Court which slapped him with a fine of Dh3,000 and ordered him to pay the due court charges and lawyer’s fees.
The defendant challenged the verdict before the RAK Misdemeanour Court of Appeal and the Cassation Court, and his appeal was rejected in both courts.
The case was then referred to the RAK Civil Court which ordered the defendant to pay the embezzled money, along with Dh1,000 for the financial damage. The court also ordered him to pay Dh500 against the damage he caused to his company’s reputation.
