“The accident happened on Thursday in Thumraith, about 100km north of Salalah on the Nizwa-Salalah Highway. Six of the passengers in the UAE-registered car died in the accident while the one remaining passenger, who sustained severe injuries, was rushed to a Salalah hospital,” said Seeb resident Abdul Rasheed Al Houthi.

Al Houthi and another source, an employee of the Traffic Department in Matrah, told Khaleej Times all the victims in the accident were from Abu Dhabi’s Al Minhali tribe.

An Al Minhali tribe spokesperson, who spoke with another Khaleej Times reporter, confirmed six members of their tribe had died in a car crash in Oman on Thursday, near Salalah.

However, when contacted neither the Abu Dhabi Police nor Oman Police could provide further details about the accident. The Traffic Department employee said Oman police had confirmed the accident to him, telling him there was also another fatal accident near Nizwa at almost the same time which did not involve Emiratis.

In August last year, seven members of an Emirati family from the Al Ka’abi tribe in Al Ain also died in a similar accident in Salalah.
