Six men have stood trial at the Ras Al Khaimah Misdemeanour Court for allegedly stealing electric cables from houses that are under construction across the emirate. They have reportedly been involved in 18 thefts.
Court records showed that five of the defendants - all Arabs - sold the stolen cables to a scrap workshop run by the sixth accused, an Asian.
When they appeared in court, the defendants denied the charges, but they were shocked when the second man admitted to the crime.
He confessed that he had taken part in one robbery, involving the first, third and fourth defendants, but he said he knew nothing about the other incidents.
The rest of the accused had alibis of their own.
The first one said he just took some of the electric cables left by a group of people.
He said he was driving his car with some of the men at Dheit area when they saw people hauling cables late at night.
"They fled when they saw us, and they left some of the cables behind. I took them, but I didn't know where they were from," he said.
Later, patrols caught him with the stolen cables, and the police found some tools wire-cutters and other tools in his house.
The third accused said he was arrested while sitting at a coffee shop and not at the crime scene, while the scrap buyer claimed he didn't know that the cables were stolen.
The trial was adjourned to September 28 for the verdict.
