The court, presided over by Judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi, ordered that the 24-year-old defendant pay Dh21,000 in temporary compensation and that he be deported after serving his prison term. He has been on trial for murder. The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days at the Court of Appeal.
Another Sudanese shepherd told the prosecutor that there were previous disputes between the defendant and the victim over dealing in camels. On that day, he saw them engaging in a fight. It was in the morning of December 9 last year in Al Marmoom area in Al Habab. The victim was stabbed twice in his chest below the heart and in his abdomen.
When the witness reached them, the victim was lying severely bleeding on the ground and the accused was standing beside him with a small knife in his hand. Another shepherd came and they took the victim in his car to the main road. By the time an ambulance reached there, the victim was dead.
Another Sudanese shepherd confirmed the witness’ statement about seeing the victim lying seriously injured on the ground. He told the prosecutor that there were disputes between the accused and the victim over camel trade which were settled prior to that day. He said that the shepherds usually kept knives which they needed to cut ropes and the one used by the defendant was a pocket knife.
A police corporal of Al Foqaa police post was on a daily patrol duty when he was stopped by the shepherds. They told him about the victim in their car. He held the defendant, who admitted to him that he had stabbed the victim. The accused alleged that the victim had beaten him with a rod but the police officer could not find it.
