The outlets were found flouting the consumer protection rules during surprise inspections in the locality.

Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the Department of Consumer Protection, said a team visited the market, mainly butcheries and chicken shops, as part of the department’s activities for monitoring prices during the holy month of Ramadan.

“The department has fined 119 errant eateries, groceries and outlets for flouting regulations in all seven emirates this Ramadan,” he said. Explaining, Dr Al Nuaimi said the violations spotted in the markets of the UAE included unreasonable price hikes, manipulation of price labels, displaying the goods under the sun giving a chance for them to rot and lack of cleanliness.

“However, the situation is stable in general and prices are reasonable and acceptable. “All food products and goods, particularly the necessary ones for the rest of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr, are available,” he added, noting that the instances of price hikes found in Ras Al Khaimah were very few.

Al Nuaimi told the reporters accompanying him in the tour that food prices in all markets in the UAE were significantly less than those registered in Ramadan in 2011 and 2010. The inspection team, which also comprised representatives from the RAK Department of Economic Development, spotted some tricks used by outlets to mislead consumers. “Some have replaced the boxes and packets of some fruits with those for other fruits,” he said.

“More surprise inspections will be conducted in the remaining days of Ramadan and during Eid Al Fitr, mainly to check foods and food products most consumed during the feast to curb violations and protect the consumers’ rights.”
