Dubai: A Pakistani worker allegedly poured gasoline over his compatriot and set him on fire in a fit of rage on Monday in Dubai’s Discovery Gardens area. The victim sustained minor burns in the incident. Some construction materials in the area caught fire and firefighters had to battle the blaze for more than half an hour before it was brought under control.
According to Mahmood Hamad, Spokesperson of the Dubai Civil Defence, the fire was reported at 8.30am from an under-construction building behind the Ibn Batuta Mall. Fire brigades from Al Barsha and Al Quoz were rushed to the spot and the blaze was brought under control by 9.07am.
The victim was rushed to a city hospital, where he recuperating in a stable condition. Forensic experts of the Dubai Police are investigating the case, Hamad said.
The 29-year-old suspect has been arrested and is being interrogated by the police. He will be referred to the public prosecution on charges of endangering the life of a worker and damaging property.
