The 34-year-old Bangladeshi suspect identified as N.A. was arrested following a number of complaints lodged by customers of the department.
Brigadier Maktoum Ali Al Sharifi, Director of the Capital Police Directorate of the Abu Dhabi Police, said the thief used to enter the government department early in the morning holding in his hand a big envelope that contained blank papers, pretending to be a customer. The suspect was arrested at the reception of the department, wearing the national attire of Pakistan, which he wore as a disguise to elude suspicions. Some items belonging to customers were found with the thief.
Al Sharifi said the suspect had been deported in 1999 on charges of theft, pickpocketing and other security concerns.
Though he had been given a deportation order, the accused once again entered the country illegally in 2007.
As many as nine complaints were filed by customers at the department since October this year. Since then, the police have been on the lookout for the suspect.
Cell phones, wallets and other valuables were stolen from customers while they had been getting their papers processed at the government department.
The suspect admitted to entering the country illegally to commit pickpocketing and theft.
He said he often took advantage when customers became inattentive, leaving beside his/her mobile phone and other valuables.
