xMajor-General Mohammed Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Director-General of the Police Operations at the Abu Dhabi Police, said that the incident occurred in mid-June in Bani Yas city and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) managed to identify the suspect who fled the country by land to Oman.

Al Menhali said that the 28-year-old killer, identified as M.N., had throttled the victim (32) to her death. After confirming that she breathed her last, the suspect tied up the woman’s hands and legs with ropes, wrapped her body in plastic and a blanket and left it in a rented room before fleeing the country. He said the suspect was extradited to the UAE. It was said that the criminal turned himself in to the Omani authorities pretending that he did not carry any identification papers so that he could be sent to prison and then to be repatriated later to his home country. However, M.N was arrested with the help of Omani authorities.

Al Menhali said that six Asians were detained in Abu Dhabi in connection with the crime as they are suspected of covering up the crime. They are involved in helping the suspect flee the country.

During interrogation, M.N. said that the victim, who absconded from her employer and had been working illegally as a domestic help, importuned him to marry her, claiming that she was pregnant. As he rejected her proposal, she aborted the pregnancy by drinking herbal drink. The suspect claimed that the woman kept on asking him for marriage. He had borrowed some money from her and had requested her time to repay the loan. However, she moved to his workplace and lodged a verbal complaint to his boss, which put him in an embarrassing situation among his colleagues. That prompted him to kill her, he said.

Colonel Dr Rashid Mohammed Bursheed, Director of the CID at the Abu Dhabi police, said that the suspect, a cleaner, testified that he rented a room on top of a traditional low-cost house in Bani Yas city and lured the victim to come to his house. He said he had sexual relation with the victim for five years.

Bursheed said the landlord noticed a foul smell emanating from the room and informed the police.
