The case dates back to June last year when the duo struck up an online friendship in just three days, before arranging to meet at a hotel’s nightclub.

The defendant arrived at the victim’s room and identified himself, as she did not know his name. She invited him in to her room and asked him to wait while she got dressed in the bathroom.

Upon exiting the bathroom, the woman was taken by surprise when the man raised the volume of the TV and held a smashed glass up to her face, threatening to kill her if she did not hand over all her money. He then grabbed her by the hand, moved her to the bedroom and ordered her to open the locker, but when she refused, he hit her with a wine bottle.

The victim tried to run away, but the defendant chased her and pulled her back by her hair. She tried again, to run towards the bathroom but slipped and fell to the floor. However she managed to escape from the room and sought the help of hotel security guards.

Later, the woman discovered that her iPhone and wallet — containing Dh6,000 — were missing.

The police were called and they later arrested the suspect. On interrogation he confessed to having sold the iPhone and alleged that the woman had assaulted him with the bottle of wine.
