Two Pakistani men, who impersonated Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers and robbed a compatriot of Dh200,000, stood trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.
Al Muraqqabat police station was alerted about the incident on August 8. The two defendants - a 28-year-old driver and a 31-year-old worker - have been placed in detention ever since. They had accomplices who are still at large.
The complainant, a 43-year-old gardener, said that around 9.30am he left his place in Hor Al Anz. "I was holding a transparent bag in which I kept Dh200,000. I was to deposit it at the bank. My friend was waiting for me near my car."
When the complainant and his friend got inside the car, they were attacked by four men, including an African. "They grabbed us and claimed they were CID officers. They showed us a handcuff and what they claimed was a police ID," he told the prosecutor.
The complainant and the witness were then forced to ride in the defendants' car. "We were made to believe there was a drug case against us and they were taking us into custody. We were made to sit in the back and they took our IDs and mobile phones."
The defendants then drove to a location in Al Hamriyah, where they kicked the complainant and the witness out of their car. They even allegedly ran over the complainant's right hand. The robbers then fled the spot.
A forensic report showed that the assault left the complainant with bruises.
A ruling will be pronounced on October 20.
