Two Pakistani men, who tried to import as many as 2,998 psychotropic pills through the Dubai International Airport, were charged with importing medically-controlled pills by the Court of First Instance.
The two - a carpenter, 35, and a blacksmith, 28 - were arrested on June 14 this year.
A customs inspector testified that he was on duty at the inspection spot for post packages at Terminal 2, when a shipment was detected containing clothes and medical pills. "I then searched it and found clothes and pills inside. The shipment details did not state anything about the pills," the inspector said.
The package, with about 3,000 pills, was then referred to the Dubai Police's General Department of Anti-Narcotics. A police lieutenant from the department said: "We obtained a prosecution warrant to arrest the shipment's owner. The shipping company's PRO arranged with the latter on the phone to meet him outside a hotel to deliver the package to him."
Anti-Narcotics officers were watching when two Pakistani men picked up the package and signed on the receipt in the hotel's parking lot.
"We arrested both of them. One of them claimed he picked up the pills on a compatriot's request in Pakistan. He was to deliver the drugs to another man here later, and claimed that man in his home country threatened to kill his brother if he did not comply. The other defendant denied having anything to do with the drugs," the lieutenant added.
The hearing has been adjourned to October 18.
