A man has been accused of reckless driving, assaulting a police officer, taking his gun, and evading arrest in Sharjah.
Police were on patrol in Al Nahda area when they spotted a reckless driver with over-tinted windows.
After running the car's number plate in the system, it turned out it was fake.
Police signaled to the Nigerian defendant to pull over, but he refused and gave chase.
He was finally stopped at Nahda bridge, where the accused was apprehended because he got stuck in traffic.
The police officer took his gun and broke the car window to see six African nationals, five men and one woman, in the vehicle.
The driver took advantage of the moment and assaulted the police officer, took his gun, then sped off in the direction of Dubai.
Dubai Police Operations Room was contacted to pursue the vehicle.
When police nabbed the suspect in Hamriya, those who had been inside the car had fled.
Police tracked down and arrested the woman as well as another passenger.
Upon searching the vehicle, the weapon was found with no bullets inside. The police officer testified in court that he had only used it to break open the window and scare the person inside the car.
During the court hearing, the accused said that he was driving a Nissan car and had been involved in a minor accident with a pick-up.
When police asked him to stop, he tried to make a run for it because he had no driver's license.
He denied the assault charge and taking the officer's gun.
The hearing was adjourned to Febrarury 25.
