A Dubai expat has been convicted and sentenced to three months in jail and a fine of Dh150,000 for offering a bribe to a Dubai narcotic officer after a drug raid.
The commercial broker was found guilty by the Dubai Court of First Instance of offering a Dh 150,000 bribe to an on-duty narcotics police officer to let him walk free following a house drug raid.
27-year-old British expat will be deported for offering a bribe of Dh150,000 to the officer after a raid that took place in his villa in Jumeirah in November 2017.
The narcotics officer, who was offered the bribe, told the court that he was assigned with two colleagues to search the defendant's villa in Jumeirah.
He told the prosecutor the accused offered him the bribe inside the patrol car on their way to the general directorate of narcotics.
"I was sitting next to him in the car when he offered to give me any amount of money to let him go. I was surprised and did not respond. He repeated the offer and I ignored him again. He then offered to pay me Dh 50,000, which he kept raising till Dh150,000."
The officer added, "The accused then said he would give me the cash if I dropped him at the nearest bank."
The officer reported the defendant to the directorate shortly later.
The latter admitted during the public prosecution investigation that he offered the on-duty officer the money in Al Mankhool area following his villa search.
He said he possessed crystal meth and the reason behind his offer was to talk the officer into releasing him as he was worried about the legal actions he would have to face.
The defendant has the right to appeal the verdict within 15 days.
