A 21-year-old man, who bit the hand of a police officer and assaulted another cop, stood trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on assault and verbal abuse charges.
Public prosecution records show the unemployed Spanish man got very upset when two on-duty officers apprehended him and he resisted them. He also spat on the ground inside Al Barsha police station and abused the officers. The case dates back to March 23.
A police officer said they were called in to an incident where they spotted the suspect behaving erratically and looking drunk. "I told him to calm down as he started yelling at us. However, he tried to assault me and as we were handcuffing him, he would not comply with our orders and was aggressive instead."
They restrained him as he used bad language to them. "We took him handcuffed into the police patrol car and when we reached the police station, he bit my left hand. Inside the centre, he kept resisting us and spat on the ground. It was like that until we took him inside the detention cell," the policeman recounted during the prosecution investigation.
A Filipina woman, 32, said that she was with the accused and others at a nightclub. "We later took a cab. During the trip, the accused assaulted the driver who then pulled over and called the cops."
The woman told the prosecutor that she witnessed the defendant being aggressive with the police officers who arrived to the scene.
The taxi driver told the interrogators that he was taking the accused and his female companion from a hotel to the Dubai Investment Park when he punched him all of a sudden for no reason, which prompted him to stop the car and call the police.
The defendant admitted he had consumed alcohol and could not recall what happened.
Forensic reports showed one of the two police officers was left with bruises while the cabbie got scratches due to defendant's aggressive behaviour.
The trial resumes on November 5.
