A man was sentenced to six months in jail by a Dubai court on Thursday for assaulting and verbally abusing a taxi driver while he was intoxicated. He will be deported after the jail term.
According to the public prosecution records, the case dates back to March 29 when the 32-year-old Nepalese man insulted the Indian driver. He then punched him in the face, breaking his front teeth.
The Court of First Instance ordered the accused to pay a Dh2,000 fine on alcohol charges. During his trial, he denied both assault and verbal abuse charges.
However, he confessed he had consumed alcoholic drinks.'
The 49-year-old complainant recounted during the prosecution investigation how the defendant insulted him and then punched him for no reason. "I told him to get out of the car shortly after he stepped in Al Rafaa, sometime after 8pm. He wanted to go to Al Muteena. He lookeddrunk and talking in a bad manner." However, once out of the car, the accused turned violent and punched the driver in the face. A forensic report showed that the complainant was left with a permanent damage due to the assault. The defendant can appeal the ruling within 15 days.
