Court starts retrial of South African doctor

The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court started rehearing the case of South African doctor Cyril Karabus on Tuesday after receiving a letter from the Higher Committee for Medical Liability confirming the formation of an expert medical panel to study the case.

The committee said a final report will be presented to the court at the earliest.

The court had earlier ordered to send the case back to the Public Prosecution to complete the docket and the procedures of the case, especially the original medical records, before presenting them to the committee.

The session was adjourned to February 27.

Karabus is accused of manslaughter of a girl with lukaemia who was in need of a blood transfusion. Prosecutors claimed the doctor forged a document claiming the transfusion had taken place when it had not, leading to the girl’s death in 2002.
