Civil defence corporal jailed, fined for accepting bribe

A truck driver offered Dh10,000 bribe to teh corporal to cancel a fine of Dh 50,000 registered against the truck.

The Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday sentenced a civil defence corporal to six years in jail, followed by deportation and a Dh10,000 fine for accepting a bribe to write off a fine worth Dh50,000. The corporal has also been discharged from his position by the court order.

The court also sentenced a truck driver to a year in jail followed by deportation and fined him Dh10,000, on charges of offering a bribe to a public employee. The truck driver offered the bribe to cancel a fine registered against the truck. The company manager, who played a middleman between the driver and the corporal, and handed the latter the bribe money, was sentenced to two years in jail and deportation thereafter.

The judgment was pronounced by Judge Mohammed Jamal, head of the Second Court Circuit.

The case dates back to 2012, when a hazardous materials control officer at the Preventive Safety Department of the General Directorate of Dubai Civil Defence spotted trucks and reservoirs, which did not comply with the specifications. The officer was inspecting a company dealing with transportation of hazardous substances.

The officer stopped a truck driver and asked him for the papers authorising the operation of these trucks and tanks. The driver showed him some papers, which were found to be fake. When asked where he got the papers from, the driver said he obtained them from an officer at the Inspector’s Department. The driver identified the officer as R.T.S, 33. The subsequent investigation revealed that R.T.S. accepted a bribe of Dh10,000 against issuing the said papers.

It was also revealed that a diesel container truck affiliated to the company was issued a fine of Dh50,000, and its driver, identified as A.A.H., 40, gave Dh10,000 to the company manager, a third accused in the case, identified as A.A.N., 44, who in turn offered it to the accused corporal.

The employee was accordingly referred to the Public Prosecution, which charged him with collecting a bribe. — news@khaleejtimes.com
