A Dubai expat was sentenced to three months in jail on Tuesday for harassing a female colleague.
The Dubai Court of First Instance found the 42-year-old Egyptian expat guilty of slapping the woman, a Filipina, and groping her. He will be deported after the imprisonment.
Another accused, a 34-year-old Egyptian salesman, was cleared of forcing the complainant to give him Dh1,000 from the revenues of the dates kiosk where they all worked.
The incidents took place on April 9 last year, and a complaint was filed at Al Barsha Police Station.
Working as a cashier at a dates and coffee kiosk, the woman said the duo were salesmen at the same place.
"On the day of the incident, the first defendant slapped me inappropriately and then groped me for a few seconds. The other accused approached me shortly and slapped me on the face.
I cried and then went to the ladies room to wash my face. He later told me to give him Dh1,000, which I did out of fear. The money was from the shop's revenues for the day," she said.
Another Egyptian staff member at the kiosk told the prosecution investigator that he learnt from the cashier how the second accused forced her to give him Dh1,000 from the cash register.
Both incidents of sexual harassment and extortion were captured on the shop's surveillance cameras. The footage was used as evidence in the case.
No visible injury was detected on the complainant's body, the forensic report showed.
During the investigation, the first defendant claimed he touched the complainant as a joke.
The other man admitted that he touched her face and claimed that he took the amount of Dh1,000 as a loan.
The ruling is subject to appeal.
