A 39-year-old Sudanese national has been found guilty of espionage and sentenced to life in jail to be followed by deportation by a UAE court. The Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal on Tuesday found Ayman Mamoon Hassan Mahjoub guilty of recruiting agents at government departments to obtain "critical and confidential bank and property information" of bank customers and government departments that could harm the interests of the country, its VIPs and symbols.
The court also sentenced a 35-year-old Emirati, AbdulAziz Mohamad AbdulAziz, to 10 years in jail and fined him Dh100,000 after finding him guilty of spying for a foreign country.
Tamim Al Saadawi Mohamad Abu Al Ezz, 36, has been jailed for 10 years and fined Dh150,000; and Ayed Khaled Taha Ahmed, 51, and Lebnan Saleh Qahwaji, 41, have been jailed for 10 years each and fined Dh100,000 for misusing their posts. They abused the powers granted to them to hand over top secret bank and property information related to bank customers and government departments inside the country to an agent working for an intelligence apparatus of a foreign country.
The court ordered all the convicts to pay the court charges and fees.
The court cleared 43-year-old Yemeni Taha AbdulGhafar AbdulQader Hassan of the charges levelled against him.
Earlier, the state security prosecution charged a cell of five Arabs and an Emirati with spying for a foreign country.
