According to a senior official, an Asian passenger was caught red-handed with the contraband upon his arrival in Dubai, and was then handed over to the bodies concerned. Ali Al Mugahwi, Director of Airport Operations at the Dubai Customs, on Sunday told Khaleej Times that the suspect’s confusion aroused the suspicion of the Dubai Customs inspectors.
“Scanning his baggage, the inspectors discovered an abnormal density in the periphery of the bag. During thorough checking, a plastic bag containing a snow-colored substance, later proved to be crystal narcotics, was found therein. Upon interrogation, the man denied any relation to the bag and claimed that it belonged to another man in his country. He also said that the drugs were supposed to be delivered to another East Asian country,” he added.
In March and April this year, the Dubai Customs thwarted two bids to smuggle over 12kg of crystal narcotics, worth around Dh500,000, into the UAE through the Dubai International Airport. The Dubai Customs, from January to June 2011, foiled six separate attempts to smuggle around 18.4kg of the narcotic crystal worth over Dh6 million at the Dubai International Airport.
In December 2010, the Dubai Customs foiled a bid to smuggle 113kg of crystal narcotics, worth Dh44 million, in twhe Transit Section of the Dubai Cargo Village.
Al Mugahwi said crystal narcotics contain methamphetamine, and is processed into forms of ice or crystal meth. “The base is wrapped in paper or stuffed into the pipes snorted, inhaled or smoked. Also it can be mixed in a drink melted and used in needles or swallowed.”
