Organised by the Sharjah Cricket Council, the programme is the first of its kind in the UAE designed to promote and popularise the game among the nationals in Sharjah, in particular, and UAE in general.

Football is the main sport in the region and it is the need of the hour to venture into new sports.
UAE has talent and needs to focus on more sports. Cricket could be one of them and this great initiative by SCC will go a long way in popularising the game in the region.
While talking to Khaleej Times, Waleed Bukhatir, vice-chairman of the Sharjah Cricket Council, said: “There is enough interest for cricket among UAE nationals and we want to tap that interest through this programme which will run for two months.”
“Sharjah has become synonymous with cricket, having played host to international cricket for years and then setting up its own Al Dhaid Cricket Village facility to cater to growing demand for the game. And this new initiative to promote the game amongst UAE nationals is part of the Emirate’s drive to keep the momentum rolling,” he said.
“We, at the Sharjah Cricket Council, will provide all facilities to ensure the programme is a great success,” he added. It is a great cause to attract the youth towards the healthy activity.
It is not easy to make UAE boys to play cricket but it is not impossible.
Waleed, son of Abdur Rehman Bukhatir (father of UAE cricket) added: “A lot of thinking has gone into putting together the programme which will help us unearth fresh talent and develop the game at the grassroots level. We need to have a strong base if we aim to popularise the game among the UAE nationals,” he said.
“I am pretty confident about the success of the programme and I am sure we will continue to have such initiatives in the future as well. We have allocated a separate budget for the programme to achieve our goal of raising a full-fledged national team one day.”
Outlining the features of the programme, Mazhar Khan, secretary of the Sharjah Cricket Council, said: “We will conduct the programme for UAE nationals, aged between 10 and 15. It will be run three times a week, starting from Saturday, December 25, and will be supervised by qualified coaches.
“The Sharjah Cricket Council will not only provide the kits and equipment, but will also take care of transportation facilities to and from the Sharjah Stadium. In addition, the council will give cash allowances to motivate the players. The cash incentive to all youngsters will be based on the attendance and performance.
“At the end of the programme, a team of national players will be selected based on their performance and commitment. They will be enrolled at the ICC Global Cricket Academy for further training to hone their competitive edge,” Mazhar concluded.
