However, a top bowling performance from pacer Umar Gul coupled with some sensible batting from Pakistan ensured that the Test, dominated by South Africa on day one, was evenly poised on Saturday.
South African coach Corrie van Zyl admitted that Pakistan have made a comeback into the match.
“I think Pakistan have come back into the match because of the way they bowled this morning. And also the way they came out batting today. I think it is a lot closer today than it was last night,” he told reporters in a post-match conference.
He was disappointed with his team’s performance on day two.
“Having this day we had yesterday, it is obviously a disappointment. I think the intensity could have been better.”
But the coach was happy to see the improvement from his bowlers in the third session.
“The first two sessions were not good for us. But we bounced back nicely in the third session. We bowled really well and brought the run rate right down to 2.6 per over, which is good to see. We could bounce back. That was important for us today. The spinners kept the pressure on Pakistan after tea and they brought the run-rate down,” the coach said.
Sunday’s morning session could be decisive for the fortunes of both teams.
“The new ball did the trick in the first two mornings. With the ball, now 55 overs old, it remains to be seen whether it would nip around. We will know whether the conditions or the new ball is the factor tomorrow. The important thing for us is to know how well we bowl tomorrow.”
