Unperturbed by a smattering of early wickets falling around him, the 26-year-old opener swept to his second ODI century in 29 attempts — underpinning England’s innings that was threatening to fall apart when the hosts were reduced to 85-4 in the 22nd over.

Kevin Pietersen contributed a quickfire 41 but England’s competitive total will not worry the tourists, who scored 309 in a 69-run win at Headingley on Friday that leveled the five-match series at 1-1.

Legspinner Jeevan Mendis had the best bowling figures for Sri Lanka of 2-40.
