England’s spinners put the brakes on the Australian batsmen restricting the hosts to 147-7.

Australia set off to a flying start before England’s bowlers rattled through an underperforming top order, as was the case Wednesday, when England notched a one wicket, last-ball win in Adelaide, in the first match of the T20 series.

At the MCG, Australia lost 4-17 as Graeme Swann and Michael Yardy turned the match, the two English spinners recording identical figures of 2-19 from their four overs.

From 57-1 after six overs, Australia’s fortunes dramatically slumped when wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine fell for 21 from 12 balls.

New T20 captain Cameron White continued a miserable summer for Australian skippers, trapped LBW for a duck by Swann.

It was left to second-game Aaron Finch to ensure Australia posted at least a competitive total, the right-hander clubbing 53 not out off 33 balls.

Finch combined with a struggling Steve Smith (13) to add 51 for the sixth wicket.

Veteran and high-priced Indian Premier League recruit David Hussey again looked out of his depth in scratching his way to just eight from 16 balls.

Shane Watson again looked polished in making 17, but then holed out to the bowling of Adelaide hero Chris Woakes, while fellow opener David Warner swung hard but didn’t middle too many in making 30 from 26 balls.

Worrying for Australia, six of England’s previous eight wins have come after batting second.

England is aiming to extend its record T20 international winning streak to nine matches, while the embattled home side is trying to end a five-match losing run in the shortest format of the game.
