The year 2018 gave us a mixed bag of movies with many big budget A-list stars' films being given the thumbs down at the box-office whereas low-budget movies with strong scripts worked well with both fans and critics alike.
What will 2019 have it store for us? Arti Dani lists some of the movies we are looking forward to this year at the theatres including Sonam Kapoor's Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and Kangana Ranaut's ambitious Manikarnika.
January
Manikarnika
Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is the first big release of the year 2019. The historial film which is directed by Krish and Kangana is based on the life of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi and is releasing on January 25. It is always nice to see women fighting wars on the big screen. Earlier, Hrithik Roshan's Super 30 was also supposed to release on the same day but the movie has been postponed as of now, with no release date in sight.

February

Gully Boy
The powerhouse talent of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt are coming together for the first time in Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy which is releasing on February 14. The movie which is based on the underground hip-hop scene in Mumbai will have its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February. After being accepted as a mass hero with Simmba, we are expecting another firework from Ranveer who plays a rapper in the movie. Ranveer has worked in Zoya's previous film Dil Dhadakne Do. This will be Alia's first film with both Ranveer and Zoya. We can't wait to catch this movie at the theatre!
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga
Rumour has it that this Sonam Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao starrer tells the story of a young girl from a traditional Punjabi family who discovers she has feelings for another girl. Sonam and her producer sister Rhea have been trendsetters who've had the guts to tell daring stories and we only expect excellence whenever these two collaborate. Releasing on February 1, this is the first time that Sonam will be seen on the big screen along with her father Anil Kapoor.

March
Mental Hai Kya
After winning our hearts in Queen, Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao are back with Mental Hai Kya. They have already won us with the tagline that says 'Crazy is the new normal'. Both the actors are seen showing their whacky side in the poster of this psychological thriller. We are absolutely ready to go on this mad ride with these two insanely talented stars. The movie is out on March 29.

April
Kalank
Kalank is one the biggest multi-starring period dramas to come out this year. It stars Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Kunal Khemu, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sanjay Dutt in lead roles. This Abhishek Verman directorial will release on April 19. The late Sridevi was initially signed for the character role played by Madhuri Dixit. With such a talented star cast coming together for the first time, we only hope the script doesn't play spoilsport...

May
Student Of The Year 2
Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday are taking over the sequel to the 2012 film Student of the Year. Punit Malhotra's directorial Student of the Year 2 will release on May 10. The film marks the debut of both leading actresses.

July
Bharat
The on-screen pair of Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif never fail to create magic. They are coming together for Bharat which is an official adaptation of the 2014 Korean film, Ode to My Father. We will for sure look out for scenes that were shot in Abu Dhabi when the movie comes out in July.

August
Mission Mangal
Can we just confess that this is perhaps our most awaited movie of the year? We totally believe that the immense talents of Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Akshay Kumar, and more will only bring magic on screen. This is a film based on India's Mars Orbiter Mission and the story revolves around a bunch of women scientists. These are the actors who have individually broken stereotypes in Bollywood and we only expect an exceptionally entertaining and honest film from them. The movie is out on August 15.

December
Brahmastra
Brahmastra is the first film in an intended trilogy by Karan Johar. Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Amitabh Bachchan are coming together on the big screen for the first time. In an interview, Ranbir revealed that director Ayaan Mukerji has spent six years of his life working hard to make an original story and that the trilogy would be made over a period of 10 years. This is perhaps the most ambitious in-house project of Karan Johar's so far.
Sooryavanshi
If you have seen Simmba, then you must have noticed the announcement of Rohit Shetty's next Sooryavanshi with Akshay Kumar. Rohit is the undisputed king of masala entertainers and we are most excited to catch Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, and Akshay together bashing up the bad guys on the big screen on December 19.

more MOVIE magic!

These are some of the other movies we are looking forward to this year. Hrithik Roshan's Super 30 is based on the life of mathematician Anand Kumar and his educational programme Super 30. Dhadak girl Janhvi Kapoor is all set to play the first woman IAF pilot Gunjan Saxena, who helped evacuate injured soldiers from Kargil in 1999. After a long gap, Priyanka Chopra will be seen in an Indian film The Sky is Pink which is based on motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhary who was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. The release dates of these movies are not yet out but we will keep you updated as and when they are announced. Stay tuned!
