SCHOLARS GIVE NEW MARITAL LAW THE GREEN

Two prominent Islamic scholars have described the new Marital Affairs Law, which has been endorsed last week by the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as comprehensive, reflective of the new social changes and fair to both spouses.

Ahmed Al Kibaisi, who headed the committee, which drafted the law, said the law took into account the teachings of all the four main schools of thought in Islam. This was the first law of its kind to be issued in the country since the formation of UAE 35 years ago, he added. Kibaisi was addressing a group of UAE national women yesterday here.

Dr. Mohammed Al Zuhaili, a member of the committee, said the law gave priority to women's rights. For example, he said, unlike old legislations, the new law gave women a free hand in deciding her marriage.
