India's Oberoi Group, which operates a luxury hotel in Dubai, plans to significantly expand its presence in the Gulf by launching hotels, resorts and a serviced apartment complex in multiple locations including Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Doha, Kuwait and Bahrain.
P.R.S. Oberoi, executive chairman of the Oberoi Group, told Khaleej Times that the Gulf and the Middle East are very important markets for the hotel chain as there is potential traffic between India and the region. "Many Indians are travelling to the Gulf and Middle East for business and for leisure," he said.
The group, which opened the 252-room luxury hotel The Oberoi in Dubai in 2013, has entered into management contracts for two new luxury properties in Qatar - a 250-key luxury hotel being developed in West Bay, Doha, and a 148-key luxury service apartment building in Lusail, also in the Qatari capital.
Planning for both the projects is well under way and construction will begin early next year, with the projects expected to be completed by mid-2018. Both projects are being sponsored by Qatar General Insurance and Reinsurance Company.
"We are extremely pleased to have been selected by the company to assist them in the design and management of these two projects and we look forward to bringing the Oberoi hospitality to the Qatar market," said Oberoi.
The group will also manage a luxury beach resort in Ajman, which will open in the second quarter of 2016, said Oberoi. "We would like to sign management contracts for a luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi and a luxury sea resort also in Abu Dhabi," he said. "We would also like to have luxury hotels in Kuwait and Bahrain."
Asked about the Dubai property, Oberoi said it was faring well with good occupancy levels. "We are proud that the hotel has been voted the Middle East's 'Leading Luxury City Hotel' for the second consecutive year at the World Travel Awards in 2015," he added.
The group, which also has a luxury beach resort at Sahl Hasheesh in Egypt, plans to open a luxury resort in Marrakesh, Morocco, in the second quarter of 2016. A luxury city hotel is under construction in Casablanca, which is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2017, said Oberoi.
