The competition was organised by Canon to recognise grass-root photographic talent and witnessed over a thousand entries from 13 participating countries. UAE residents Noushad Pallikkal, Lewis de Mesa and Sanjay Pradhan won titles at the video and photo competition. Pallikkal and Mesa were awarded for their videos titled ‘Dubai Creek’ and the Winter in Emirates’. The third prize went to Kuwait resident Said Hussein for his video titled ‘Kuwait in Motion’.
The judges selected a winner for each participating country in the region and Sanjay Pradhan won a Canon EOS 600D for his photo titled ‘The Champ’ which captured the visual dynamics of the DMX Motocross Race in Dubai. “Shooting the picture was a tough task. I had to spend 6-7 hours under the sun and dust and after 1,700 pictures that I shot, only 10 were usable,” said Pradhan.
“I developed an interest in photography two years back. I am a banker by profession; photography is more of a passion for me. A lot of people think that photography is a really cool thing, but it requires a lot of hard work and dedication. You need to go out late at night and early morning to capture your object in the perfect light,” added Pradhan. He said that it’s not the camera, but the person behind the lens that makes all the difference.
Meanwhile, Indian national Noushad Pallikkal (30) who bagged the first place at the video competition said: “I have been living in the UAE for the last six years and coincidently, this happens to be my sixth prize in photography as well.” A graphic artist by profession, Pallikkal says his favourite place for taking pictures in Dubai is at the Creek side. “The lighting there is very interesting. I love taking pictures of the desert as well,” added Pallikkal. He added that the environment in the UAE has helped him become a better photographer.
“You have several online venues here that help an amateur photographer. I can say that my biggest teacher has been search engine Google,” said Pallikkal. After experimenting with contact cameras and mobile phones, Pallikkal began seriously pursuing photography in 2006.
Filipino national Lewis de Mesa (37) bagged the second place in the videography division. He said: “I am a freelance motion graphic designer and photography is just a hobby which I am trying to pursue. My dad got me my first camera, which was the Nikon FM2, which I later sold it and bought the Nikon F3 which I still have.”
His winning entry titled the Emirates Winter is 4-minute video that features the landscape of known and unknown places in the UAE. He describes it as “a time-lapse that captures the modern and natural beauty of the country. I travelled some 4,000km in five months during the winter”.
One of the judges at the competition, Tonya Colson, said: “In this contest, we were looking for images that capture the dynamic world. I was looking for images that capture the emotion or feeling of the moment. All of the winning images conveyed a feeling of the time and place, and provided a window into the photographer’s dynamic world.” dhanusha@khaleejtimes.com
