In the Best Local Sport Institution section, Al Thiqah Club will share the honour with the UAE Karate and Taekwondo Federation.

Al Thiqah Club — the first club for disabled athletes in the UAE — has won many accolades on and off the field in sports and recreation.

The Award’s Board of Trustees announced winners in the 22 categories of the third Mohammed Bin Rashid Creative Sports Award, honouring various local and Arabic institutions.

The Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped was selected for the awards in recognition of its outstanding achievements over the past 24 years, including its hosting of international sporting events, such as the first Sharjah Forum for Disabled Sports in April 2011 and the upcoming IWAS World Games 2011, in addition to a number of other regional and international achievements, and the adoption of prudent strategies.

Club athlete Mohammed Abdullah Al Qaid won the Mohammed Bin Rashid Creative Sports Award in category of ‘Athlete who Overcame Difficulties and Achieved Sporting Success’ after becoming a three-time gold medalist in 100m, 200m and 400m wheelchair races at the Athletics World Championships for the Disabled in New Zealand 2011, winning impressing victories for UAE sport over top-ranked competitors.

Tareq Sultan bin Khadem, Chairma, Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped, said: “Since it was founded in 1987, the Club has enjoyed the limitless support of His Highness Shaikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, as well as the follow-up and support of Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. We are proud of our achievements to date, and continue to seek more milestones, with our previous successes serving as motivation for us to live up to our responsibility.”

“Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped being awarded the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award presents clear evidence of the great support disabled sport received in the UAE. We are proud of this inspiring award which serves as an honour for all athletes. The award coincides with our celebration of the UAE’s 40th National Day, as well as our hosting of the IWAS World Games 2011 and our celebration of International Disability Day. We affirm our continued efforts to further develop disabled sport and honourably represent the UAE as a leader in this arena,” he added.

The Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped has an impressive track record of achievements over the past couple of years, including five medals (4 gold, 1 bronze) in the 2010 Junior World Games in the Czech Republic, three medals (2 gold, 1 silver) in the 2011 Athletics World Championships for the Disabled in New Zealand, three medals (1 gold, 2 bronze) in the 2011 IWAS Junior World Games in Dubai, two gold medals in the 2010 World Games in China, and 15 medals (8 gold, 4 sliver, 3 bronze) in the 2010 Middle East and North Africa Regional Special Olympics in Syria.

The Club will be participating in the IWAS World Games 2011, which will be hosted in the emirate of Sharjah from December 1 to 10. Thirteen of the UAE’s 87 athletes are Club members.

Three of the club’s 13 participants will compete in the power lifting event, while the remaining ten – including top-ranked champions and medalists such as Thuraya Al Zaabi, Ali Qambar, Obaid Al Zaabi and world champion Mohammed Al Qaid – will compete in athletics.

In the lead-up to the awards, a delegation from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Creative Sports Awards’ judging panel visited the Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped, where they listened to a detailed presentation on the Club’s achievements, strategies and objectives as well as the work process of different committees.

The delegation reviewed and evaluated nomination requirements with the Club’s Board of Directors and verified the documents submitted by the Club.
