First to head towards Jaipur are IT majors Infosys Technologies and Wipro, who have decided to set up facilities at the Mahindra Gesco Special Economic Zone (SEZ) called Mahindra World City, Jaipur, being established in partnership with the Rajasthan Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO).
Infosys Technologies Ltd has already announced that it plans to invest up to Rs4 billion ($89.5 million) in Jaipur over the next 3 to 5 years.
It will include up to Rs1.5 billion to build facilities to employ 3,000 to 5,000 people in business process outsourcing (BPO).
Infosys will also spend up to Rs2.5 billion for facilities to accommodate 2,000 to 5,000 people in IT services.
Amitabh Chaudhry, CEO and MD, Infosys BPO, said: "Jaipur is Infosys BPO's first significant expansion in north India and is an attractive location for people from this region who may like to work close to their hometowns."
Infosys is also signing a MoU with the government of Rajasthan to enhance skills and exposure of students in engineering colleges, general degree colleges and engineering students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, through lectures and courses, campus visits, faculty development programmes and other initiatives.
According to a statement from Wipro, it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for 100 acres of land in the SEZ.
The global IT services division of Wipro said its centre would come up in two phases. The first phase will cover 25 acres which will have over 100,00 square feet of built-up area and house over 1,000 employees.
