India's flag carrier Air India has announced its plans to ban the use of single-use plastics from October 2 this year, Air India spokesperson Dhananjay Kumar said.
Products such as bags, cups, and plastic straws will be banned on all flights.
"In the first phase, it will be implemented in all flights of Air India Express and Alliance air flights. In 2nd phase will be implemented in Air India flights," said Kumar.
For special meals, the airline will use eco-friendly birch wood cutlery in place of plastic cutlery. Crew meal cutlery will be replaced with light-weight steel cutlery. Plastic tumblers and teacups will be replaced with butter paper versions.
He explained, "For special meals that are ordered and paid for by passengers in advance, we will use eco-friendly wooden cutlery in place of plastic cutlery."
Furthermore, crew meal cutlery will be replaced with lightweight steel cutlery and plastic tumblers will be replaced with paper tumblers. "Plastic teacups will be replaced with sturdy paper cups," he added.
