The youngsters spoke about their experiences during the recently-concluded four-week-long summer camp, conducted by Dubai Press Club (DPC). The camp had organised field trips to give them an insight into the different forms of media, including print, radio and television.
For Grade V student Elderick Yuji Lasbanos, the camp was more than just understanding the action behind the scenes. “My mother is a journalist and this camp was a revelation on what my mother does everyday. Now I understand the nature of her job, which was one of the main reasons I signed up for the camp. Besides being fun, it also gave me an opportunity to make new friends,” he said. He claimed that he was the only Filipino in the entire camp.
The workshop seems to have had a huge impact on 13-year-old Marziah Rashid’s future plans. She now aspires to be a print journalist, thanks to the trip to a media house. “I would like to take up journalism. I am now confident that I will be comfortable with this profession,” she quips enthusiastically.
It seemed that parents, too, had their share of fun both by keeping their kids away from mischief during the summer vacation and watching them with admiration as they learnt more about the media.
Gautam Siyal, whose 17-year-old daughter was one of the summer camp participants, told Khaleej Times, “My wife and I thought of various camps for our daughter Minal. However, only this camp appealed to us. We were not very sure what the camp would have in store but as days went by, it seemed very interesting and intriguing for her and us. At the end of it, she seemed to have matured. She also seems much more confident while talking to people,” he said.
Maryam Bin Fahad, Executive Director of DPC, observed that it was an equally exciting opportunity for industry professionals to share their experience and knowledge with the eager bunch of participants. This is the eighth edition of the annual summer media programme hosted by DPC.
