The drama unfolded on Sunday morning when the worker was cleaning the new etisalat tower building’s exterior glasses on Airport Road. The machine at the rooftop supporting him to move up and down developed a mechanical glitch and became jammed.
He remained suspended for half-an-hour while civil defence personnel of the Abu Dhabi Police tried several methods to rescue him. First they used a high crane, which could not reach the required height. Finally, they broke the window of the upper floor close to the worker and pulled him to safety.
The rescue operation attracted hundreds of spectators.
“I, along with a civil defence rescue team reached the site and saved him without any injury. He was saved through the window of the building overlooking the floor where he was stuck. We broke the window glasses and pulled him in safely,” Captain Abdullah Al Tamimi, Head of Customer Service Department and Public Relations at the Directorate, told Khaleej Times.
