Around 700 owners of accommodations in various parts of the emirate were warned and given time to move the labourers to industrial areas during the municipality's campaign.

Mohammed Salem Al Kaabi, head of Security and Operations in Sharjah Municipality, told Khaleej Times that the inspection campaign targeting the bachelors' houses would be intensified in Al Rolla, Al Nasseriya, Al Qadisia, Al Musalla and Mysalon areas.

He added that the municipality had stepped up inspections to force the labourers to move to the industrial areas.

Many of the owners of the accommodations and the companies whose workers were living in these accommodations had been warned earlier and given two months to find alternative accommodation in the industrial areas.

After they failed to abide by the orders, the municipality ordered disconnection of power supply.

"The municipality will take further action against them if they refused to abide by the civic body's regulations," Al Kaabi stressed.

He pointed out during the inspection campaign the municipality found out a large number of violations such as wooden partitions to accommodate larger number of people.

In one case, the inspectors found out that 23 families were living with bachelors in a traditional house that had been divided into small spaces.

In another case, they also found 15 families living in a building along with bachelors.

The municipality inspectors asked them to remove the wooden partitions and vacate the houses.
