Abu Dhabi - The GCC Secretariat General recently discussed the provision of a proposed unified food law applied across the six member countries — UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.

According to Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), a secretariat committee formed for the law recently met in Abu Dhabi.

The panel will start with the study of food control, storage and safety standard applied in all the member-countries and come up with a best common practice submitted to the secretariat for its consideration and approval before the united GCC law is drafted and implemented. The committee will also provide well-studied and examined provisions for the law that would be applied in all member-countries.

Apart from representatives of the GCC secretariat, representatives of member countries attended the meeting. Officials from Ministry of Environment and ADFCA represented the UAE in the discussions.

The GCC-level committee was formed in line with the decisions taken in the GCC Ministerial Committee for Food Safety which held its first meeting at the GCC Head Quarters in Arabia last September.

“Any regulation pertaining to the food sector need to be based on the approved international best practices so that both public and private players comprehend them easily. It should be fool-proof and sustainable with no loopholes left for any risk or negative effect on the economic or social aspects in connection with food,” said Dr Mariam Hareb Al Yousuf, Executive Director of Policy and Regulation Sector at ADFCA.

Dr Mariam highlighted the importance of including the detailed provisions in the proposed GCC executive regulation as it serves as an interpretation and explanation to the provisions stipulated under the unified GCC food law which was developed by the GCC food safety council earlier.

Dr Mariam explained that the task of drafting the proposed GCC executive regulation has many reflections of which the commitment towards supporting each and every step to strengthen and expand the cooperation between the GCC member countries comes first. - nissar@khaleejtimes.com
