Fishermen in Ras Al Khaimah no longer have to travel far to claim their earnings from their catch - these are now delivered right at their doorstep via drones.
The Fishermen Society in the emirate observed that some of their 20 members live in far-flung areas and all of them are out in the sea most of the time. To collect their profits, they used to go all the way to the fishermen quarters at the RAK fish market - until the society started using drones that are programmed with their respective GPS locations.
"Fishermen don't have to appear in person at the fish market anymore, helping them save time, money and effort," said Humaid Al Zaabi, deputy chairman of the society.
The society sells its members' catch at specific counters, ensuring that the fish are sold at competitive prices.
Profits are then distributed to the fishermen on a weekly or monthly basis, according to their preference, Al Zaabi said.
"Some fishermen, mainly those staying in remote northern and southern areas, prefer to collect their profits at the end of the month."
The project was rolled out in pursuance of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, who ordered that smart services be provided to local fishermen, he said.
