Following a large number of complaints about thefts of luxury cars in various parts of the emirate, the investigation section at Sharjah Police swung into action. The police arrested two Arab expatriates identified as B.A and K.A. M when they were trying to send some of the stolen vehicles outside the country.
During the interrogation, the two offenders confessed that they had stolen the cars when their owners parked them on the road leaving the engine running. The thieves also admitted that they had intended to send several cars outside the country to sell them at good prices. The police said that most of the stolen vehicles were four wheel drives and new models of luxury cars belonging to UAE nationals and car rental companies.
The police said that most of the car thefts took place during the busy hours of the evening on commercial roads including the Jamal Abdul Nasser Street, Al Wahda, King faisal Road , Rolla area and Al Zahra streets.
A top official from the police CID warned the motorists not to leave their cars unattended with engines running even for a short while on the busy roads.
Leila Abbas, an Arab expatriate, had left the ignition on in her four-wheel Hyundai car after parking it on Jamal Abdul Nasser Street while she entered one of the shops to pick up some clothes. She received the shock of her life on finding her vehicle missing from its parking place, Leila told Khaleej Times. She said that though there were no valuables or cash in the car, she was still “shocked at the incident.”
