The two brothers — Marwan (18) and Imran (17) — both of whom did not have a driving licence, left their family house in their father’s vehicle at 4pm without the knowledge of their parents. The accident occurred when the car Marwan was driving, flipped over several times after he swerved it to avoid hitting a car coming from the opposite direction. Both Marwan and Imran died, while two of their friends survived with severe injuries.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Major Saeed Al Matroushi, Head of the Traffic and Accidents Section of the department said the accident took place due to overspeeding and inexperienced driving. The car flipped six times over a distance of 70 metres, and the two brothers were thrown out of the car as a result of the impact and died on the spot. He said that the father of the boys had warned them several times against driving without a driving licence.

The Major urged parents to exercise control over the reckless behaviour of their teenaged children, especially with regard to driving. He said that youngsters of age 18 and above can obtain a driving licence, which is issued to them by the department after ensuring their capability behind the wheel.

He pointed out that the department has recently organised a safety campaign — as part of its ongoing safety programme under the slogan ‘Traffic Safety is Collective Responsibility’ — to minimise traffic accidents in the emirate.

Major Al Matroushi added that during this campaign, the patrolling traffic officers distributed pamphlets and leaflets among the motorists to remind them of the rules. Several awareness lectures were conducted at various locations in the emirate to educate the public about the negative consequences of such recklessness. Announcements were also made by the Ajman Radio to raise awareness among drivers to give up this practice and follow safety regulations.

Major Al Matroushi said the department conducted several lectures targeting teenagers at all schools in Ajman to familiarise them about the dangers of reckless driving and overspeeding, as well as educating them about the relevance and significance of safety rules. “The increase in the number of deaths and casualties on the road is a result of speeding, reckless driving, failure to fasten seat belts, and jumping red lights,” Major Al Matroushi commented.
