Engineer Eisa Abdul-Rahman Al Dosari, CEO of Public Transport Agency and Chairman of the Supreme Committee of the Award, said the award played a crucial role in involving the business and government sectors in the authority's vision for "safe and smooth transport for all."

"Establishing a safe, integrated and effective transport system, ensuring safety of passengers and road users, and conserving the environment are among the key challenges confronting the existing organisations responsible for planning, designing and implementing roads network and transport systems," he said.

The award is in three categories - Managing and Streamlining Mobility Operations, Transport Safety and conserving the environment.

The first category aims at promoting initiatives that reduce the use of private vehicles by promoting public transport.

"It also seeks to obviate the need for mobility by private vehicles, and increase the ridership of mass transit modes such as public buses, marine transport and trains. It covers promoting traditional mobility methods such as walking and cycling, enhancing the movement and mobility of people with special needs, and any other initiative or practice that could lead to optimum utilisation of the main parking lots for private vehicles," Al Dosari said.

The Transport Safety category aims at increasing awareness and upgrading safety levels.

"Conserving the Environment category is concerned with any initiative or practice capable of minimising the negative impact of transport modes on the environment, through suppressing air-pollution levels resulting from the waste of various transport modes," he said.

The deadline for receiving applications for the Dubai Sustained Transport Award from government and semi-government agencies as well as private sector organisations is October 30.
