“This budget shows the government’s level of commitment towards quality education and determination to improve the quality of people’s lives in the UAE,” Dr Hassan told Khaleej Times last evening. “We are confident that we are going to achieve our initiatives as part of the strategic plan.”

The Minister was reacting to the UAE Cabinet’s decision on Tuesday, approving a Dh42.2 billion annual budget for 2009, which includes a 23 per cent allocation for education and 37 per cent for the key services sector.

Next year’s budgetary allocation for education has been hailed by the UAE Ministry of Education and other educational authorities.

“This is a great opportunity for the Ministry of Education to develop education in the country,” said Mohammed Juma bin Hindi, executive director for Educational Institution Services at the Ministry of Education.

Dr Abdulla Al Karam, director-general and chairman of the board of directors at Knowledge and Human Development Authority, said: “This decision reflects how important education is to the growth and continuing success of the UAE.”

“We believe that all forms of learning are at the core of both personal development, and the development of our nation.”
