Amid conflicting claims regarding recovery of Shahbaz Taseer, son of slain ex-governor of Punjab Salman Taseer, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has constituted a two-member committee to look into the matter.
In its initial report, the committee has reportedly confirmed that Shahbaz Taseer's release from captivity was not the result of any operation as claimed by the Balochistan government and other senior officials.
The report said that evidence suggested Taseer was set free by his captors, rejecting claims that he was recovered in an operation by law-enforcement agencies.
The report, however, stated that it would be premature to say if he was released by kidnappers after receiving ransom.
"Facts and evidence show that Shahbaz Taseer has not been recovered through any operation, but his captors set him free on their own.
The committee recommended issuing an official rebuke to the officers who had informed the minister that Shahbaz was rescued in an operation. "No institution has the right to claim credit for Shahbaz's recovery."
Shahbaz Taseer was abducted at gunpoint in Lahore on August 26, 2011.
He was found by security and intelligence officials in the Kuchlak area of Quetta on March 8.
